| Established on January 20, 1870, the Rose Island Lighthouse
faithfully served mariners for over 100 years. It was abandoned
100 years later (after the Newport Bridge was built) and
fell victim to vandals and the elements. To save this wonderful
piece of history, a group of concerned citizens formed
the Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation. The restoration
culminated with the re-establishment of the light in 1993.
Today visitors young and old re-enter
a by-gone way of life in old-fashioned keeper's quarters
lovingly restored to their original turn-of-the-century
ambiance. In this "living
historical classroom" people learn about the working
lives and amusements of lighthouse families through some
of their own possessions and photographs.
We are happy to accept
donations of all kinds of household articles from the
1920s and earlier for the museum. We
also need things for the more modern keeper's apartment,
for our office and boat. Don't be afraid to offer other
items that aren't on the list.
For the Museum:
1. Working player
piano that you pump with your feet. Must be in
good condition and/or come with a "fixit" fund
to put it in working condition.
2. Wooden kitchen
chairs (need
to be sturdy)
3. Blank writing books -
for overnight visitors to write in.
For our Education Programs:
1. Someone to build
underwater viewers - From photos and
instructions.
For the Keeper's Apartment:
1. Queen size bed -
Sturdy headboard, footboard and side rails needed.
2. Bath and beach
towels -
any condition. (Old towels will be cut up and used as cleaning,
paint and boat rags.)
For the office:
1. Office space to
rent near the water. Our office occupies
approximately 650 sq. ft on the 2nd floor of the Armory
Building on Thames Street. Our 32-foot lighthouse tender
Starfish is docked year-round
at the Ann Street Pier. Depending on what the City plans
to do with the Armory (a beautiful historic building
that needs extensive repairs), we will probably need
to find a new home somewhere nearby. Any ideas?
2. A good paper shredder
Remember, in most instances, donations of personal property
are tax-deductible at fair market value. Check with your
tax advisor for specifics.
If you have something
to donate, call 401-847-4242 or
email Charlotte@roseisland.org. Someone is usually in the
office answering the phone from 9-1 Monday - Friday.
Thank You !!
